The law is kinda tricky here, but in many cases you would not want to be caught with it if you committed any other crime

i actually did very carefully google it, on a federal level it isn't illegal under child pornography laws but is illegal under obscenity laws. and, more than likely, someone with drawn cp is going to have the actual thing 

some state supreme courts have ruled that it's just flat out child porn
