The two party system has been in play since the beginning of the country. Alexander Hamilton (the guy on the $10) wanted federal power while Thomas Jefferson (guy on the nickle and $2 bill) wanted more power to the states. Since then there had been dissolved parties that were replaced by other, keeping the status quo, or in one case they switched their names.
It's been, through the entirety of the US history, a north and south divide. And it is, for the most part, been about states rights. In a way, the two party system became a part of the countries culture.
The only time a third party came close to winning was in the 1912 election, when Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson (Democrat) and William Howard Taft (Republican) ran. Theodore was livid at the way Taft ran in his 4 years, after molding him into his protege while he was in office, so he ran for a third term as the Progressive Party. Taft and Roosevelt split the vote and Wilson got the presidency. Since this happened, the thought of "if I vote for 3rd party its a wasted vote!" is imprinted in the minds of the american people. This is why Bernie and Trump didn't go independent, but disagreed with the parties views. WW and FDR went on to making the federal powers supreme over the states, cementing the two parties hold on the elections, so that a third party will never get a chance with the funding the Democrats and Republicans get.
There is much, much more but this is an incredibly simplified version of a harrowing political system.
