Do you believe in any crazy shit, spame? - GeorgeBubbinzInSpace - 06-02-2016

Do you think aliums, ghosts, bigfoot, or anything similar is real? Abductions? Did Dick Cheney orchestrate 7-11? Crazy conspiracies? False flag operations?

Is there something kooky you believe in with little or sketchy evidence?

RE: Do you believe in any crazy shit, spame? - risbolla - 06-02-2016

no,,,,nothing i believe in is crazy

RE: Do you believe in any crazy shit, spame? - fat lesbian - 06-02-2016

well extraterrestrial life is obviously real that's just statistics but bush pronanly did 9/11

RE: Do you believe in any crazy shit, spame? - Relaps - 06-02-2016

9/11 was some fucked shit and the govt has had plans to go into the middle east for oil since before desert storm

aliens are probably out there somewhere but unlikely anyone has intergalactic travel

for the good of humanity and the survival of the species i hope there's a cataclysmic event that kills a few billion people. idgaf if i'm one of them it'll be worth it for the future if they can overcome the disaster

either that or get some terraforming going on i'm tired of this rock

RE: Do you believe in any crazy shit, spame? - Ben - 06-02-2016

i believe many nonstereotypical insane things

-extra terrestrial life is statistically inevitable but i would wager that we will paradoxically never find it due to how comparatively short of a lifespan life exists (that is, there is life elsewhere very far away from here so we wont meet them and any life that was or will be near us, we wont be alive to meet them)

-time travel to the past is impossible due to the universe's protection against paradoxes. this and the confirmation of time travel to the future are actually not that crazy if you read about it

(as a rule i dont believe any crazy, completely unsubstantiated shit because its stupid to believe something for absolutely no good reason)

-there is no god. more specific than not believing in one, i think there is now a good model of the world philosophically and scientifically which does not just "not include" but explicitly excludes the possibility of a god. debate me atheists (please dont really)

-i wouldnt be surprised if the government ignored warnings about 9/11 but i think that would be a case of incompetence rather than collusion. this is an openness and not a view i actually hold or champion

RE: Do you believe in any crazy shit, spame? - Ben - 06-02-2016

this is a good thread but anyone that actually believes in bigfoot is retarded so ill offer to steer this in the direction of rational arguments that are still kinda weird rather than completely irrational speculation

there is a good book by modern science peeps called "what we believe but cannot prove" where they speculate what their field may find in the future or what theyve learned sort of implicitly rather than explicitly about their material.

this web page has a few as examples. there are famous names but most of them i dont recognize

RE: Do you believe in any crazy shit, spame? - Ben - 06-02-2016

ok actually i can say one more thing thats related and its this-

im interested in the skeptics movement because i sympathize with their arguments often even if their drama and culture is as laughable as anyone elses. the ONE thing they often trash that i still kind of maintain is they really dont like chiropractors

and like, the idea that you can cure cancer through adjustments or that you body has some energy or that you should pay a "doctor" a ton of shit for this is all lame BUT

if you have a legitimate back problem doesnt it actually help to get some kind of attention for it? like idk this is rarely addressed. in penn and teller's bullshit show which is like a skeptic manifesto they did a chiropractic show i THINK they mention this caveat offhand and i was like "wait what no go back to that what do you mean it can be ok"

I would say a lot of things about history related stuff but it's all subjective and theoretical of what happened

*leans back and takes out my vape pen* well boys looks like we're in for a ride *pfufs e-cigar*

RE: Do you believe in any crazy shit, spame? - fat lesbian - 06-02-2016

i agree w ben on pretty much all of that esp re: space and physics related things. ALTHOUGH i would not necessarily rule out time travel or something analogous to it. we discover new things we thought were impossible all the time n as a Scientician™ (If that's what ur still doing? i haven't asked recently. im starting on my physics degree in the fall) we should kno that ruling things out entirely is v much not in the spirit of science

RE: Do you believe in any crazy shit, spame? - fat lesbian - 06-02-2016

like would it be what ppl think time travel is? no, probably not. but since we know which situations can slow time to the point of effectively time traveling into the future and have successfully (i think it's been a while since i read about it) teleported single atoms i mean like... why not, except for the outdated conceptions we have of how the universe supposedly "works" which work indirect contradiction to the other ways that we know that it works. we obviously have something wrong and who's to say we don't have more wrong

RE: Do you believe in any crazy shit, spame? - fat lesbian - 06-02-2016

and w regards to extraterrestrial life i do not think we are ever going to find it. the Fermi paradox/great filter are worth reading about for anyone who's interested in that

RE: Do you believe in any crazy shit, spame? - Ben - 06-02-2016

looking at time travel from the ground up, we are already doing it at a 1:1 scale so being smarmy about it gives a no-contest "yes"

you are correct that we wont see it in the conventional sense. itll just be a relativistic sort, where one guy experiences 20 years while everyone else experiences 200 (i didnt actually do the math) and so you are kinda traveling in time but its shitty time travel

also yes i am 98% through with my astronomy/plan sci bachelors
