RE: our lord and saviour corbyn thread - grue - 06-10-2017

parliament, bro

there's an x ammount of seats and they are distributed among the parties according to a % of the votes

may's party didnt have enough seats to get a majority, meaning the other parties can join and refuse to pass any laws her government tries to make

it's how governments work in all eu countries afaik

RE: our lord and saviour corbyn thread - grue - 06-10-2017

the portuguese election was an interesting one because the social democrats won but didnt get a majority in parliament

"winning" here is being the one with the most votes but that still ammounted to like 40%

so they tried to form government but because they didnt have the majority the parliament didnt accept the government

then the left-wing parties, three of them, banded together and that ammounts to over 50% of the seats

so technically our government "lost" but because it has the majority support, it's still up and running
