this is going to be a huge shit show on the world stage. catalans peacefully vote and demonstrate their intention for independence - Spanish police kick the shit out of them.
Then just as spain prepares for executive order 155, the Parliament votes for independence. So now if Spain flexes muscle it's going to be condemned but spain also can't afford to let them go. Literally can't afford it.

Rajoy fucked it all up lol. they could have simpy let the vote go through and then say "yah, but it means nothing", drag out the process till noone gives a fuck anymore
and most cataláns probably didnt want indpendence in the first place

ALSO the basques aren't nearly as rich as the cataláns so not that many people are as keen to become independent and lose spanish/EU support
