HTS is on the run! Al-Qaeda in Syria has been having a lot of trouble recently, losing ground in northern and southern Syria.
In the South, the Beit Jinn pocket in South West Syria had finally been cleared of the HTS and FSA members fighting there. The HTS members were sent off to the Idlib pocket on the border with Turkey as a part of the agreement, while the FSA members will go to the Dara'a pocket on the border with Israel.

In my previous post, I had mentioned very briefly about an offensive against HTS already underway. This was just a probe while the rest of the special forces were consolidating there after taking care of the bulk of ISIS. On December 27th, the SAA launched a major offensive, with the objective to secure the town of Abu al-Duhur and the adjacent airbase.

Because of the offensive in the north, the HTS really needed a distraction and a moral boost. So, where else would they get that then the urban meat grinder that is east ghouta. On December 31st, HTS launched an offensive to encircle the vehicle maintenance base that the SAA controls. They were successful in doing so. After quickly sending reinforcements down, the SAA launched a breakthrough attempt and succeeded on the 7th.
