I don't know how you can say the religion isn't at least a factor when he's been investigated before and pledged allegiance to ISIS before doing it.

If his father thinks it was triggered by seeing two gay people kiss, that would be another reason I think religion would definitely play a part. It's a hate crime regardless, but I'm pretty sure his religion has something to do with it, and religion has always been an enemy to the gay community, so I don't know why you'd want to defend or ignore it.
