university of michigan, they get an insane amount of funding for research and their astronomy department is incredible. an elective i can take (which would be free to me) is spending a summer at an observatory in Arizona conducting research and a requirement for an astrophysics degree is participating in research being done by the faculty and presenting at a symposium/possibly getting published so im very excited!

it’s also an incredible medical and dental school which means a lot of the kids who go there are children of wealthy doctors and shit which is uhhh difficult for me but you don’t encounter too many of them in physics outside of engineering

(This post was last modified: 04-11-2019, 05:51 AM by fat lesbian.)
im copying and pasting this from a comment I made on fb
“this is a joke post but it’s also very important because it’s a visual confirmation of a region of spacetime that conforms exactly to einsteins predictions. the fact that the shadow cast is round means that the event horizon is spherical which confirms the presence of an event horizon, and with the radius of that event horizon we can solve for the mass contained in the region. and it was consistent with what we thought!
This is another confirmation of general relativity which is absolutely huge, it also does a lot to confirm some of the theories regarding black holes and galaxy formation, AND it confirmed that stellar mass and supermassive black holes both conform to their own sets of rules. They both have the same sets of fundamental properties (mass, spin, and charge) which also means that they will evaporate via Hawking radiation in much the same way as micro black holes (but those evaporate instantly because the rate at which they evaporate is inversely proportional to mass). This has implications for the understandings of dark matter and dark energy and actually just like. Lol this is just a big deal for astrophysics because we don’t have to just assume it’s true anymore and it narrows a lot of things down“
And that it’s as clear as it is is tbh fucking incredible. this was compiled from so much data the hard drives were physically mailed because it would take longer to send it over the internet

on top of all that, GREAT for me considering i want the bulk of my research through grad school and ideally beyond to be about black holes roles in galaxy formation

im really glad that people are acknowledging women’s contributions to this too, we make so many groundbreaking discoveries in physics and astronomy but they all get ignored. ppl don’t even give a shit about annie jump cannon and she’s so badass that that was her real name

yo i saw that on fb, another well-deserved point toward womanity
and that little factoid that the data for the image was so large that it was faster to send internationally by plane than over the internet lol awesome
