A guy from my high school just randomly sent me a message on fb asking what I think about the new Rammstein video after not talking for years. I never cared about rammstein but it turns out he became a nazi (also very fat) in the meantime and was angry that there are black people in the video. So he wanted to recruit me by pointing out the postmodern marxist conspiracy behind it. 1488 yall

Rammstein always attracted fascists which is hilarious considering the band aesthetic + lyrical themes but self-awareness isn't really the brand of basement dwelling losers is it

I mean I get the Di6 fanboys who are all fucking nazis because Douglas P actively encourages nazis to come on his show (even though I'm still completely convinced it's all a part of his Grand Joke) but Rammstein, lmao, the guys marching half-naked on stage brandishing dildos and cracking whips
they're a BDSM mockery of authoritarianism; nonwhistanding the fact that morons who don't take the time to understand aesthetic and lyrics will point and scream fascism (just like religious zealots were wailing about the dildos) to the extent of forcing the band members to come out and reveal they're leftists; but that in itself is bullshit because this fucking gotcha leftism has no moral highground to stand on; but more importantly they still have the loser protofashphere listening to them talking about buttsex in german because it Sounds White and that's so amazing I could cry

I think rammstein has very very little to do with authoritarianism or bdsm, or at least didn't initially. They just had a french/german romanticism + heavy metal aesthetic mashup that they wanted to brand which they did successfully. Then people with 200+ iqs made the mental link of german + deep voice = nazis and they kinda adapted and ran with it. The first time rammstein used malewitsch's cross, which they ripped from a better art collective who does care about authoritarianism, was when they first grew in popularity in the English speaking world

i think saying rammstein have little to do with authoritarianism or bdsm etc is not completely wrong or right
it's one of many things they use to generate shock and controversy but i don't think they really care about bdsm/authoritarianism/whatever itself
to use the video you linked as an example the very first song is about the ramstein air show disaster, till is literally singing about dying children and the smell of burning flesh, while setting himself on fire

well, ok, sure
I mean I always thought of the militarized sound and dances + the overt sexual display as an integral part of the aesthetic but obviously I don't understand it as well as you do
•
no you're not really wrong
it's certainly an important part of their aesthetic and appeal but they're also more than willing to discard their usual style
this ballad for example is rather different from the usual rammstein in my opinion
honestly i think rammstein's strongest point is their lyrics which is kinda funny considering many of their fans don't even understand them and translations ruin them somewhat
