If Kris thought it was weird how into their personal lives the forum members were, he would've found it really weird how into each others' personal lives members were.  I never felt the forum was uninviting to outsiders, just that the language is very different, vulgar, and offensive, and that can scare off people who don't understand it or adapt to it quickly.
