the bald guy is named jose coelho and is a self-labelled communist and has been a part of the portuguese communist party since forever, until 1999

still considering himself a communist, he has since considered other options but was, up until about ten years ago, widely unknown. he is from the island of madeira

in 2007 he entered a small party called the party for the New Democracy (PND) - a centrist coalition of political outcasts, and managed to get himself elected to the madeira parliament. madeira has an autonomous government and was up until recently lead by this dinosaur (João Jardim) who managed to stay in power for over thirty years and turned madeira into a fiscal haven.

coelho opposed him and the social democratic majority of the madeira parliament since he got elected in 2007. but his methods are... unorthodox. you see, the PND didnt elect Coelho, they elected another guy, but João Jardim managed to scare him away by calling him a fascist, so Coelho stepped up. and since then, it's been a wild ride.

he does not care. at all. he says whatever he wants, and that's landed him several lawsuits and two jail sentences. his shenanigans include

wearing a massive clock to the madeira parliament to protest something idk



pulling a nazi flag to protest the fact that the socialist revolution wasnt being celebrated that year, presenting it to the head of parliament



dressing up as a convict to protest the fact that the parliament kept telling him to shut up



and of course, crashing an official ceremony to show his ISIS flag to protest the fact that he had several lawsuits for defamation of character (the second dude from the left is the portuguese president)



his lawsuits have cost him a lot of money so naturally he showed up naked to the madeira parliament



ANYWAY in 2011 Coelho ran for national elections as head of his new labour party. he was on national tv on a debate with other small parties and he crashed the maoist party with protest signs




this led the then maoist leader, Garcia, to get really angry at him and leave, and there's no love lost between them now. so much that Coelho has called him a "CIA agent" and a capitalist colaborationalist, which are major insults to a maoist of course. Garcia is a lawyer and took Coelho to court, and recently won.

Coelho now has a jail sentence, commuted to weekend stays at jail for like two years, for defamation of character.

that's where the original video unfolds. you see, a guy in Madeira called Renato Barros decided a while ago to take over a small patch of land and secede from Portugal creating the Principality of Pontinha. a self-proclaimed state, Pontinha offered sanctuary to Coelho as a refugee during weekends so he can escape his jail sentence. the video I posted is the official ceremony of Coelho being welcomed into Pontinha as a refugee by Archbishop Renato himself.
